How secure are the goods in your containers?

The issues facing the global supply chain for goods in transit are vast. An average of 11% of units arriving at distribution centres have shown to have experienced some level of damage. The financial losses, together with the negative impact to a companies reputation associated with such damage can be significant!

Mega Fortris have successfully supplied solutions to the food and beverage industry for decades and our products help to ensure the safe and secure movement of goods whilst in transit.

Dunnage Bags

Mega Fortris offer two types of dunnage bags for use by either air, ship or road. Both products are fitted with the Mega flow valve for optimal efficient inflation and are 100% recyclable.

The paper dunnage bags contain a plastic inner layer to assure air tightness even in high pressures. The woven polypropylene dunnage bags are designed for securing heavy duty cargo in shipment and have an inner layer to assure air tightness in high pressures. The outer layer is highly resilient and resists most chemical solvents, bases and acids meaning it is the ideal storage bag for all precious or fragile goods.

Both bags act to reduce the physical stress caused by movement of the products in transit and can consequently reduce the direct and indirect costs associated with breakages/damage.

Desiccant Bags/Poles

Desiccant bags/poles provide protection for climate-based hazards to packages, such as excess moisture in containers that can damage or effect the quality of the products. This is particularly relevant in the food and beverage industry.

Desiccant bags/poles can play an essential role controlling the internal environment of containers, ensuring that products arrive in the same conditions as they left. Absorbing the excess moisture stops packaging getting damaged, peeling labels, mould and mildew. Application can be done through hooking to lashing points in the container or by simply placing them on top of the goods

When is Green Strap not “Green”?

Organisations have been known to go into competitive wars with each other to ensure they are just better, bigger and stronger than their opponent in all fields of business. This doesn’t just include the general sales and branding and profits; this competitive war is also taken into the more serious areas such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), or becoming a more Greener business overall.

Now we know what you guys must be thinking, “well it’s a good thing that businesses are competing for which organisation is greener or which one is doing more for the local community”. We agree that it’s good to be doing these things. However we are just here to highlight the fact that though organisations are doing a good thing by becoming greener they are forgetting to become greener in all departments of the organisation.

What we mean by this is that though organisations are cutting down on the use of paper and are investing technology into becoming more environmentally friendly with more waste being recycled and less use of natural resources; they forget this kind of innovation can be implemented across all processes.

One aspect which is always a touchy topic for organisations is the transportation and the materials used for delivering goods. This is where Fortris Load Secure would like to introduce a new product which all organisations transporting goods will use, no matter what product or services they provide.

Furthermore we can guarantee that more than half of the readers will not have thought of this product when they consider becoming green. Fortris Load Secure would like to introduce the Green Performance Strapping; (for those of you unsure about what we mean, strapping is used to secure goods during transit to ensure the goods are supplied safely).

Fortris Load Secure are now able to supply strapping made of recycled raw materials making the strap itself 100% recyclable. This Green Strapping is manufactured using the new HSS Process coupled with a cutting-edge surface finishing method, significantly reduces the weight of the strapping while leaving its dimensions and maximum tensile strength unchanged.

Extruded Polyester Strap

PET Extruded Polyester Strapping is the safe and economical alternative to steel strapping or banding systems. Extruded Polyester Strapping, abbreviated to PET strapping (polyethylene terephthalate) is used in heavy duty applications demanding high tensile strength and fast application by the installer. Twice as strong as polypropylene strapping and as strong as steel banding, PET Strap is capable of withstanding and retaining a much higher tension on rigid loads. Typical PET extruded polyester strapping applications include bricks, timber, and textiles.

Fortris Green Performance Strap has been known to generate substantially less waste per meter of strapping:
• It has lower weight of strapping, and therefore lower coil weight, as compared to commercially available standard products.
• It has lighter sleeves
• Less packaging material
• Made of recycled material – making it 100% recyclable
• Greater transport efficiency – (Less CO2), as it is possible to put more metres on coils and pallets.
• Environmentally friendly energy recovery – in the in-house biomass power plant.

Cost Effective Strapping

Fortris Green Strap is very cost effective and easy handling:

• Attractive price per metres of strapping
• Less waste and thus lower disposal charges
• Better utilisation of cargo and storage space due to optimised strap length per coil
• Lower coil weight (about 20kg) and 1-2 strap technology; makes strap changes safe and easy

Fortris Green Strap Sets New Standards for Green Performance:
• An innovation production technology (HSS Process) helps reduce the weight of strapping by 10-15% without altering its dimensions and maximum tensile strength.
• Significant reduction of packaging waste, and enhanced transport efficiency.

Furthermore a study carried out by an independent researcher shows that an innovative production technology, in combination with an innovative surface finishing method, result in an environmentally benign strapping product which in terms of CO2, water and air emissions. But also in terms of generated waste, brings benefits for the environment, compared to other straps. Throughout its entire lifecycle Fortris Green Performance helps save 4.5kg of CO2 per coil compared to conventional strapping.

In essence for companies to become greener they don’t need to invest millions into research and development, just smaller changes like this can have a big impact as organisations like ourselves do the research for you. It’s a no brainer.

Safely Transport your Scaffold Equipment

Scaffolding industry has seen a major growth in the recent years with the government and large organisations throwing millions of pounds into the construction industry with scaffolding playing a big role in most construction sites. Most organisations spend thousands of pounds in building these temporary structures to ensure solid structures are developed may it be offices, warehouses, retail parks, shopping malls or as simple as houses. Scaffolding equipment is probably one of the very few types of equipment to be transported from one site to the next without seeing its home base for a while. Due to the high demand in scaffolds for the construction industry most of the times the scaffolding equipment will be leased to one organisation. Then as the lease finishes it will go directly from one site to another. Making scaffold equipment one of the most transported equipment within the construction industry.

However it is essential to ensure all the equipment is transported safely as a mishap in transportation of scaffolding equipment can cause devastating damage to the transporter and other road users. It is essential to secure the equipment with the best Load securing solutions to ensure these mishaps don’t occur.

At Fortris Load secure we have been working with scaffolding organisations for many years and understand their needs and have been providing them with the best solutions to ensure load safety.

Below are the most popular equipment used by scaffolding companies to transport the equipment:

Hot Melt Strap: Hot Melt Strapping provides high strength to hold the equipment in place allowing for safe transport of goods. The material is weather resistant and hardly absorbs moisture, providing protection to delicate surfaces from damage. It is also re-tensionable in volume losses in the packaged goods, and has a high linear and system breaking strength. Hot melt is known to be as strong and due to its material it will not rust providing a longer life of the strapping. Hot Melt Strapping is available in various colours.

Polyester Composite Strap: The core of our composite strapping is made of untwisted polyester yarn. This type of strapping achieves higher strength and lower elongation. Composite is known to be as strong as seal and due to its material it’s weather resistant. Composite strapping is known to be best suited for rough surfaced making an ideal choice for scaffolding equipment.

30Kg Fitting Bag – these bags are used to place equipment in to ensure they are protected through transportation. These bags can also be used to store scaffolding buckles or joints to ensure they are kept together and safe.

Woven sacks – The white one use sacks are used widely in the scaffolding industry to hold metal fittings for scaffolding, clips for the banding strapping, any ppe required for the job or essentially any sundry items required for the scaffolding job.

Fortris Load Secure have years of experience in Load Securing equipment for all industries, ask one of our expert team members for the right solution for you.

Slipsheet Handling

Slipsheet Handling

Slipsheets provide packagers an innovative solution. Slipsheets offer palletless handling of unitized goods, using push/pulls is more economical and can reduce damage to goods. Slipsheet push/pull handling systems are more advantageous and cheaper than the use of traditional pallets.

Push/Pull Handling Systems

Slipsheets are a key component to Push/Pull Handling Systems. A slipsheet is a thin, corrugated, solid fiber or a plastic sheet that replaces wooden pallets. The second component to a push/pull handling system is uses a special attachment that is mounted on the front of fork lift trucks.

Slipsheet Applications

While the Applications for slipsheets are growing at a steady rate, the majority of shipping firms still see wooden pallets as being synonymous with unitized shipping and handling. There is little information available about the use of slipsheets, which brings no surprise to the new generations of shippers and logistics managers coming into the industry with little awareness of what a slipsheet is, and where slipsheets are used an alternative unitized shipping method.

Slipsheets grow in popularity

As new applications continue to appear worldwide, paper slipsheet manufacturers are reporting steady growth in annual sales of 10% or more. Over 150 million paper slipsheets are produced annually.

Slipsheet Advantages

Slipsheets have advantages and disadvantages as do wooden pallets. However when slipsheets were used in applications, the advantages more than outweighed the disadvantages. The main advantages are:

Paper slipsheets are made of a light-weight paperboard, which on average One British Pound Sterling or less per unit-load meaning paperboard slipsheets are for single use. With a slipsheet the costs of tacking, recovering and repairs incurred for a wooden pallet are not required for slipsheets. Slipsheets are also environmentally friendly as they can be easily assimilated into the wastepaper markets for recycling into new products.

Slipsheets are Space Savers

Slipsheets occupy lesser space than pallets, even when under a unit-load a slipsheet takes up 10% less space than a typical pallet. Infact the space occupied by slipsheets allows for an increase in the unitized payload of product by 10. In other words, where a freight load requires 100 containers for shipments on pallets, can be shipped in 90 containers when using slipsheets.

Slipsheets can save you money!

Slipsheets can be used economically to provide a unitized loading and unloading method for lightweight products that cannot be economically shipped on pallets due to lightweight transportation penalties.

Where can a slipsheet be used?

Some of the early applications for slipsheets were used for reducing long term storage of unit loads on pallets of tinned products in the food industry and also soft drinks from the beverages industry, to avoid large investment costs in pallets during the seasons. Slipsheets are now a popular choice throughout the food industry and are widely used in large manufacturers for long haul shipping operations to avoid costly pallet exchange programs.

The problems of pallet repair and the sanitation of reused pallets gave further impetus to the manufacturers’ changeover to slipsheets. Since the use of slipsheets it was found that the higher density payloads in many shipments was possible, which also resulted in reduced transportation costs.

Slip Sheets

Slip Sheets are very useful products within the Transport and Logistics industry. Slip Sheets are thin plastic sheets used to replace pallets, they can be supplied in a range of sizes to suit your pallet dimensions. The slip sheet is used as a unit load support device in vehicle delivery and transportation of products.

The plastic slip sheet is made from recycled high density polyethylene or polypropylene materials. This type of material allows for greater non-tear strength and an increased number of uses in cold and humid environments. Its advantages include longer sheet life, durable lips, ability to be stored in cold or humid environments, and that it can be handled by a roller conveyor, slip sheet lift truck, AGV, or powered unit load transportation devices.

The Fortris Plastic Slipsheet will not absorb moisture and maintains its strength and integrity even when wet. Most solvents and chemicals have no effect on the sheet. The non-porous plastic material will support neither bacteria growth nor insect larve. In freezer applications, surface sticking is eliminated. All Fortris Plastic Slip sheets meet FDA standards.
Slip sheets can save space and weight so that the bulk of your shipping weight is pure product. When you use reusable plastic slip sheets, not only will help you reduce labour, shipping expense and waste disposal costs, but you will make a positive impact on the environment by consuming fewer resources.

Slip Sheet Advantages

Using slip sheets instead of wooden pallets allows for 12–15% more products in material handling containers.
Slip sheets do not require maintenance, but can easily be replaced.
Significant reduction in material handling costs.
Decreases loading/unloading time by up to 60%
Weighs 1/20 as much as wooden pallets, reducing shipping costs.
Can be customized to fit any size load.
Eliminates the need for pallet exchange.
Reusable and reliable.
Most are recyclable.
